The 10 commandments of responsible roadtripping
Slow Down
The goal of a road trip is not the destination, it's the experience. So disconnect, slow down. Let yourself be guided by your desires and sometimes by the weather: a corner of nature with an amazing view, access to the sea for a morning dip, a spot at the foot of a beautiful mountain. The essential thing is to live the moment, okay?
Go Easy
Reducing your speed by 10 km/h saves up to 1 liter per 100 km and only takes a few minutes. It's worth it, right? Same with air conditioning, you can easily consume 20% more fuel, would you rather take off your jacket? (opening the windows is also a good idea)
Travel Locally
Magnificent spaces are often to be discovered right next to home. There's no need to travel miles to marvel. Nature invites us everywhere to be aware of its beauty. If you want to roam further, it's ideal to approach the van rental point in a soft way: train, carpooling, and even biking for the more athletic!
Sleep Without Disturbance
Choosing where to sleep is THE thing to appreciate van life. But parking your van should not be done haphazardly. First, check for no parking signs. Then make sure it's not a protected area or a private space (normally you need the owner's permission). Also, beware of municipal or prefectural orders that proliferate in summer, otherwise, the bill may be high...
Precious Water
Water is a precious resource, it must be managed with care. Mandatory use of ecological and biodegradable products for dishes as well as for personal hygiene! Wastewater must always be disposed of in dedicated places (motorway or camper areas) and the hatch must be closed tightly.
Zero Waste
It's obvious: no waste can be left behind. Everything must be carefully collected and sorted. You should bring reusable containers (water bottles, boxes) and prioritize buying local products with minimal packaging. While picking up trash left by others may not be pleasant, leaving a place spotless after your visit is a real satisfaction!
Proper Hygiene
Yes indeed! Personal hygiene in nature is not a detail! 2 options: either you dig a sufficiently deep hole with a shovel to leave your waste, cover it with soil, and collect used toilet paper in a small airtight bag, or you collect absolutely EVERYTHING in a small bag that will be thrown away later in a suitable trash can. The motto: be equipped (shovel, bags), and above all leave no trace behind!
Fire with Caution
The principle is that when you're not sure if it's allowed, it's prohibited. Then take all precautions: abstain in case of drought or wind, make a small well-defined fire, have water close at hand. It goes without saying that any fire must be completely extinguished before moving away or sleeping. Too many serious fires are started by poorly managed campfires. No more jokes at all.
No-Impact Objective
Any parking ban must be respected. Nothing is picked or destroyed to preserve biodiversity. No negotiation possible, nature is our playground, let's protect it.
Respect
It's said that one's freedom ends where another's begins. This also applies to road trips. In nature, leave animals alone and respect other travelers (not too much noise or light).
